Why were we in Williamsburg, KS?

The same reason we found ourselves in Starlight, Indiana at Huber’s Farm the day before. Road food. But first the log…

It’s day 3–No, I don’t know what Star Date that is. Another 426 miles in the book, and Kristen is very tired of the car. We made it as far as Cheney and are camped on a state park reservoir. If you ever plan to travel a long distance and camping/glamping, I highly recommend the state park system. Fortunately for both of us, the next two days has Colorado and southern Utah in store–we can’t wait. (Unfortunately for the Rockies, the Nationals lead them 7-1 in the 3rd inning).

As I mentioned, we routed through Williamsburg, Kansas today, population “insert your own joke here.” But in Williamsburg one finds Guy and Mae’s Tavern, which is only a little dive bar with a cloud of blue smoke calling your name as it drifts out the back alley. We could smell it two blocks away. But, one block away was the Williamsburg Produce Company where we parked. I don’t think they have any produce, dairy, or feed–for anyone. The picture you see is representative of the town, but the ribs and pork sandwich (a thin sliced smoked ham) were outstanding.

After lunch, mostly while Kristen napped, we passed through the Flint Hills of Kansas. Difficult to describe, but its rolling prairie of brilliant green grass stretching to the horizon in every direction. The Flint Hills are a specific ecoregion and covered by the largest expanse of blue stem tall grass prairie anywhere in the U.S. Big ranches exist there and grazing cows are abundant, but it never met by the blade of the plow as most of the grasslands did. This is it–I clearly did not take this photo but stole it from the internet.

More smoke on the menu. For dinner tonight we ate campfire steaks. If you’re ever in Great Falls , MT be sure to check out Eddy’s Supper Club. Eddie makes campfire steaks just like the cowboys used to out on the range–says so right on the menu. Ours were close.

Another 7 or so hours on the road tomorrow and you’ll find us around Alamosa, CO. Before then, I’m sure we’ll have another Adventure in Lulu.

  1. We love the post! look forward each day for the new chapter. David’s first camping trip was camping at Round Butte when he was about 7 weeks old.
