Lulu Part III: The All Excuses Tour

We are back in the trailer. A little late this year. David, in a bid to avoid seeing me have a breakdown in Kansas (it is very flat) opted to drive and pick me up in Aspen. Good by me. I got to avoid the flat parts and board Lulu the trailer just when it gets interesting. We stayed in an Aspen forest our first night. The sky was so full of stars it looked like a disco ball. Hudson and Lola are both thrilled David and I have come to our senses and left DC for wide open country. As we got underway our second morning, we saw a fox carrying home his breakfast, a too slow rabbit. We moved on to the Gunnison National Forest. Found a campsite next to the Taylor River. I asked David why he was not getting up early to fish and he said “trout sleep in.” This is when I realized I was going to hear a lot of these excuses so I thought I’d capture them so you get the flavor of what I am dealing with.

On our way to the Taylor, David could not get the Colorado Park and Rec to give him a license online. He said it was because the system didn’t work. He meant in general, assuming it was not him. Of course, I was raised to question assumptions.  While he was gassing up, I signed in, got him a license and emailed it to him. He now believes the interwebs conspire against him.

Once we left the Taylor, we headed down to the San Juan Mountains and found a private spot on Williams Creek. Here I learned the water was “too warm” for fish. Mind you, while I am standing there in the creek, I see the fish. Later, the water is very cold. I mention this while watching David not catch fish. Now he says, “too many bait fishers have been in the water today.”

Big hike today on the Piedra River Trail. Noon finds all of us back at the campsite, Lola seeking shade under the picnic table, and Hudson sacked out among the wildflowers. Pagosa Springs is the late afternoon plan. David and I both need a shower and it was either that or we were going to soap up when we went to the Big Rig car wash. That may still happen just for the story.
