Escaping from the Hallmark Channel and DC

There is no easy way to break this to you. I’ve taken to watching the Hallmark Channel. That would be even more concerning if this was David writing, but it is Kristen. Looking for this level of escapism can only mean one thing…it is time to get out of DC and see America. David, Hudson, Lola and I are loading up Lulu, our 16-foot Airstream trailer and heading out.

It is hard not to feel like Democracy is on the ropes. I am heartened by the many people fighting for it and believe my best stand will be made out there and not here in the bubble. I was recently at the Aspen Institute and read this quote on the wall. I tweeted it and it seems appropriate to post it here:

In the end, more than freedom, they wanted security.

They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all — security, comfort, and freedom.

When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them,

when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility

then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again. – E. Gibbon

I hope to find the Americans that are giving to society rather taking it for granted. I’ve been reading about them and I want to find them in person and get inspired by them. At the end of the day, democracy is for the people by the people. I am going to ask people what that means to them. Stay tuned.
