Bear Aware

I know I stopped blogging for a bit and we have much to catch up on. Notably bears. We were in bear country in Montana and Wyoming. We knew this because you had to be in a hard-sided camper (although sometimes I felt like Lulu might look like a sardine can to a hungry grizzly). I got to one trail and there was a check list about being “bear aware”. I skipped the intro language and went straight to check list.  It said deodorant and I thought, check, put that on this morning. Lotion, check, slathered that on my legs and arms so I didn’t get burned. Food, check, I had a dog treat bag to keep pups well-behaved on the trail. Then I read the top of the list and it said DO NOT HAVE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING. Basically, I was a walking bear treat. But but but…I had bear spray. It was then I realized I didn’t really know how to use it. I asked David for a quick tutorial. You have to carry it. If it is in your pack, you’ll have a tough time getting it out if a bear is charging you. Duh. Then you flick off safety. Then when the bear gets within 10 feet of you, you can spray. WAIT. 10 feet. I am letting  a charging bear get within 10 feet of me??? I decided best to try and follow the check list a little more closely and decrease the chance a bear would charge me since I am definitely planning to faint once a bear gets within 10 feet of me. And the bear spray doesn’t work if you faint.

(P.S. This bear claims this is fake news)
